Quick answer: Pre-K is the year before primary school, usually for children aged 4 to 5. At Little Steamers Nursery, our Pre-K Steamers class uses Scholastic’s PreK On My Way curriculum, built with the Yale Child Study Center and the Children’s Learning Institute at UTHealth Houston, alongside hands-on STEAM projects.
By the time a child turns four, most Doha parents are thinking about primary school: American, British, IB or something else. That makes Pre-K the most important bridge year. Here is what a good Pre-K should cover, and how the curriculum we use works in practice.
What PreK On My Way is
PreK On My Way is a published Pre-K curriculum from Scholastic, the US children’s education publisher. According to Scholastic, it was designed with two research partners:
- The Yale Child Study Center, which developed its Mind Builder approach to social-emotional learning, executive function, motivation and creativity.
- The Children’s Learning Institute at UTHealth Houston, whose Developing Talkers model focuses on growing children’s vocabulary.
The curriculum covers language, literacy and maths, and Scholastic organises the year around monthly themes that link reading, play and projects. At Little Steamers, these sit within our wider Learning Journeys.
Why self-control matters as much as phonics
Parents often judge school readiness by whether a child knows letters and numbers. Teachers usually care just as much about “executive function”: the ability to listen, wait, remember instructions, switch tasks and manage frustration.
A child who can sit through a story, follow a three-step instruction and try again after a mistake will learn letters quickly. That is why PreK On My Way builds social-emotional and thinking skills into the daily routine instead of treating them as extras.
A Pre-K day at Little Steamers
| Part of the day | What children do | Skills it builds |
|---|---|---|
| Morning circle | Songs with letter sounds, shared reading, talking about the day’s theme | Phonics, vocabulary, listening |
| Maths through projects | Counting, measuring, comparing and sorting what a project needs | Number sense, shapes, problem-solving |
| STEAM project time | Plan, build, test and present a group project | Teamwork, persistence, explaining ideas |
| Group reflection | Share what worked and what they would change | Confidence speaking to a group |
A typical project might be designing a bridge strong enough for a toy car. Children sketch a plan, choose materials, test the bridge, fix what fails and explain their design to classmates. Along the way they measure, count, write labels and negotiate with each other, which is school readiness in action.
Is it only useful for American schools?
No. PreK On My Way is an American program, so families choosing an American-curriculum school will find the approach familiar. But phonics, number sense, independence and group work transfer to every system. Little Steamers graduates have moved on to the American School of Doha, Doha College and Qatar Academy, three schools with different curricula.
Signs your child is ready for Pre-K
Every child develops at their own pace. These signs suggest a four-year-old will enjoy Pre-K:
- They ask lots of “why” and “how” questions.
- They can follow a two-step instruction, such as “wash your hands and sit at the table”.
- They enjoy stories and notice letters, especially the ones in their name.
- They play cooperatively with other children for longer stretches.
If your child is not there yet, that is fine. These are exactly the skills Pre-K is designed to grow.
Questions to ask any Pre-K in Doha
- Which curriculum do you follow, and how do you track each child’s progress?
- How do you teach phonics and early writing?
- How do you support children who are ahead, or who need more time?
- Which primary schools do your graduates usually move on to?
