Quick answer: Good infant care follows your baby’s own feeding and sleep rhythm, gives each baby warm one-to-one attention, starts gradually, and keeps you updated through the day. At Little Steamers Nursery in Hazm Al Markhiya, babies from 3 months to 1 year join our Infant Steamers class, 2, 3 or 5 days a week.
Most parents start looking at infant nurseries a few weeks before maternity leave ends, often with more questions than answers. Will my baby nap? Who will feed them? How will I know they are okay? This guide answers those questions and gives you a checklist to take on any nursery visit in Doha.
Why the first year matters so much
The Center on the Developing Child at Harvard University reports that more than one million new neural connections form every second in the first few years of life. Those connections are shaped by everyday experiences, especially what researchers call “serve and return”: a baby coos or reaches out, and an adult responds.
For parents, this is reassuring. Babies do not need lessons or screens. They need caring adults who notice them, talk to them and respond consistently. That is the standard to look for in any infant room.
What a baby’s day looks like at nursery
There is no fixed timetable in our infant class. Each baby keeps their own rhythm for feeding, sleeping and play, based on the routine you share with us when you join. If your baby naps at 10:00 at home, we aim to keep it that way.
Between feeds and naps, a typical day includes:
- Face-to-face time: talking, smiling and copying sounds, the building blocks of language.
- Songs and books: rhymes and picture books read aloud, in English and Arabic.
- Sensory play: soft, crinkly and smooth textures, gentle sounds and changing light.
- Tummy time: short, supervised sessions that strengthen the neck, back and shoulders.
- Reaching and grasping: toys just out of reach that encourage stretching, rolling and early hand control.
Even at this age, children make early discoveries: a rattle makes a sound when shaken, a mobile turns when touched, the baby in the mirror moves when they do. These cause-and-effect moments are the earliest form of the curiosity our STEAM approach builds on.
Settling in: start slow, build trust
The first two weeks shape how your baby feels about nursery. Little Steamers uses a gradual settling-in period, paced to each baby’s age and temperament, so shorter early days let your baby get used to new faces, sounds and smells.
You can help at home:
- Write down your baby’s routine: feed amounts and times, nap signs, how they like to be settled.
- Pack a familiar item, such as a muslin or sleep sack that smells of home.
- Keep goodbyes short and calm. Long goodbyes usually make separation harder for both of you.
- Expect a few unsettled days. That is normal, and it passes as your baby learns their carers will come back.
How you stay connected during the day
The hardest part of returning to work is often not knowing how your baby is doing. Through the Little Steamers Parent App, you receive daily reports, photos and instant notifications, and you can message your baby’s educators directly. Regular progress meetings give you time to talk about milestones in more depth.
Part-time or full-time?
Infants can attend 2, 3 or 5 days a week. Many families start with fewer days while they return to work, then add more as their baby settles. Hours are 7:00 am to 3:00 pm. For help deciding, read our guide to choosing a 2, 3 or 5-day schedule.
7 questions to ask on any infant nursery visit
Whichever nursery you choose in Doha, these questions reveal the quality of care quickly:
- How many babies does each educator look after?
- Will my baby have the same main carers each day?
- How are bottles and expressed milk stored, labelled and prepared?
- Where do babies sleep, and how often are sleeping babies checked?
- How will I hear about feeds, naps and nappy changes?
- What happens if my baby becomes unwell during the day?
- Can I see the infant room while babies are in it?
A confident nursery answers clearly and specifically. Vague answers are a sign to ask more.
